Artist Profile: David Howells
David Howells lives and works in Ste. Croix, Nova Scotia. He studied fine arts at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B., and graphic design in Middleton, N.S.
David has travelled extensively in nearly forty countries. This broad range of exposure and his love of nature are evident in his paintings. Mainly traditional, pastoral landscapes and garden scenes, they reflect both the beauty of the many geographic areas he has explored and the influence of his favourite artists. His landscapes speak of a less hurried time from days gone by, often having an 'old worldly' feel that he is drawn to. He says “I’ve never really looked at them as something 'I chose to paint' ....I feel drawn and compelled to paint them.”
David’s work has evolved from photorealism (in the early 1980s) to a loose form of realism. Capturing and portraying the essence of his personal encounter with nature is just as important to him as the representational interpretation itself.
