Artist Profile: Diane Metzger
Artwork of Diane Metzger
Diane Metzger has studied and worked in visual arts throughout her life. Her formal training includes painting, drawing, brush calligraphy and other oriental arts, stained glass and pottery. She has worked in a variety of painting and craft media including watercolours, gouache, coloured inks, collage and mixed media, acrylics and oils, stained glass and fabric.
Painting subjects range from nature to figurative work, still life and abstracts. Her paintings show spontaneity, a sensitive use of colour, and lively brushstroke that together create a sense of atmosphere, luminosity and liveliness.
Diane has lived in Nova Scotia since 1988. The Nova Scotian culture and beauty of the land inspire her work.
“Whatever the subject or medium I choose, inspiration comes as much from colour patterns and the play of light as from the subject itself. I look for the spark of light that enlivens a subject, whether the light falling from sun or lamp, or the inner light of vitality. To me, that is the real subject of the piece.
In displaying a painting, I hope to give the viewer an unexpected experience: maybe a slight gap or shift from a usual way of looking, to seeing the world for a moment with fresh eyes.”
