Artist Profile: Kelly Mitchelmore
Kelly Mitchelmore
“You paint because it feels good so swing easy kid.” These simple words from Jean Mosher, Kelly’s grandmother and teacher, have been the mantra for her life. From a life in the Canadian Navy to running a B&B Kelly has toured the world, celebrated diversity, and has painted along the way.
Achieving her Bachelor of Interior Design Kelly currently operates KLM Interior Concepts – a graphic design and decorating firm. The concepts of colour, layout, and perspective for her trade have allowed additional complexity to her work and have helped mature her style. Her designs are colourful and reflect an artist’s touch while her paintings have a structure and perspective that lead to her interior design studies.
She works with both acrylic and oil and lets the project decide which one should be used. Continually experimenting with new techniques Kelly’s style often changes from painting to painting. Her favourite subject is an old building – its history and romance and untold story through angles and architecture draws Kelly and most of her paintings are of small towns or older homes and street scenes.
Kelly and her husband Jonathan own and operate Phoenix Hollow, a century home B&B in Windsor Nova Scotia. There, in the winter months, you can find Kelly in her studio, painting to loud music with a glass of wine in one hand, a brush in the other, and more paint on her than the canvas. During the summer she likes to paint amongst people outside and will set up her portable easel just about anywhere.
Kelly has just completed her latest mural for the Windsor Legion – which was unveiled in September 09.
