Artist Profile: Nikki Bis-Saunders
Originally from the Annapolis Valley, NS, I've been creating since I could hold a crayon (I quickly switched to coloured pencil ;-)
Since 1995, I've been working in pencil, coloured pencil, oils, acrylics, watercolours, photographs, and fabric. My favourite is watercolours, although I'm getting better with the oils, so look out!!
As an honours graduate of Applied Arts and Graphic Design, I've studied under John Colville, son of acclaimed Nova Scotia artist Alex Colville.
I've also had the opportunity to live in some very interesting places. Santa Barbara, California, provided the backdrop I needed to create beautiful beach scenes, and cultural pieces. Charlottetown, PEI was the right place to perfect the art of colour mixing, where I studied watercolour painting with artist Sandy Komst.
In 2002, I sold my first paintings - five beach scene landscapes from my collection.
While living in Kentville in 2003, I discovered a love of painting macro flowers (really, REALLY close up paintings of flowers), and began a series entitled "Valley Roses". One of those, Rose in Coral is for sale on this website.
Since then, I've been commissioned by provincial government and individuals looking for that special personalized painting for their loved one.
In my "free" time I run a business designing and creating custom purses for clients, some of whom even return for a second, or even a third bissbags creation.
Over the last 15 years I've given away more art than I could count - as gifts. My top three favourites were the (separate) portraits of Jim Morrison, Tupac Shakur, and Mariah Carey. I just love seeing the look on a friend or family member's face when they receive one my my pieces. It makes me happy.
